Tipi-tastic!

Posted by Staff in Eco Saturdays, England

Yearning to get away from the daily grind?  Want to go back to your roots, but don’t know how?

The answer is not in a bottle of hair dye, no, the answer is in a tipi!

In the heart of the Welsh mountains (UK), lies a cluster of tipis and yurts called the Eco Retreat.  What differentiates this from just plain old camping is that this place if more of a modern life detox center.

Your stay here is about becoming one with nature and includes Reiki healing sessions along with guided mediation and a visit to the Center for Alternative Technology.

Every little bit helps

Posted by Staff in Eco Saturdays

Many hotels have now adopted a system for guest to indicated whether or not they want their sheets changed on a daily basis.  Usually it is in the form of a card placed on the nightstand.

By changing sheets daily, hotels create more waste water and use up more energy.

Next time you stay at a hotel that has this system do your part and choose not to change your sheets daily….every little bit helps….and you know you don’t change them daily at home!

Green Hotels

Posted by Staff in Eco Saturdays

Looking for a place to stay that is earth-friendly?  Greenhotels.com has a directory of green hotels.

What makes a green hotel?  The website states that green hotels use low-flow toilets and shower heads, use environmentally responsible cleaners, offer guests the options to re-use sheets, etc.

The only problem I have with the site is that it does not state what measure each hotels take.  From what I gather, a hotel pays for membership, gets a booklet with ideas on how to make their hotel green and that is it.  It does not seem that there is any follow through to see if the hotel is actually green.

Take a look and let me know what you think…..

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Posted by Staff in Eco Saturdays, Peru, South America

reserva-amazonica

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is located in a private reserve adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve in Peru’s southern rainforest region.  The eco-friendly hotel is a beautiful melding of nature and comfort.  For nature lovers there are rainforest trails, an anaconda walk, a butterfly house  and a treetop canopy bridge….then for those in need of relaxation, Reserva Amazonica has a spa overlooking the Madre de Dos Rios River and offers treatments using ingredients found naturally in the Amazon.

Accommodations consist of 30 private thatched roof cabanas, all with: screened porch & hammocks, tropical ceiling fans, warm water showers, low–impact electricity, organic bath products, robes & slippers. Rates range from $250 to $500 per night for two and include all transfers, meals and excursion.  The large (almost 30k acres) ecological reserve is only a 25 minute flight away from the city of Cusco.  For more information click here.
